In contrast with all our cultural assumptions about love, Jesus says the love that ought to mark his disciples is selfless, sacrificial, service-oriented love. In the language of the New Testament, it’s called “agape.” In this sermon from Luke 6, we learn straight from the mouth of Jesus that the love his disciples show, not just for their friends, but for their enemies, is the true measure of spiritual maturity. We show this love for others because God has shown us this type of category-defying, enemy-winning love in the life, death, and resurrection of his son Jesus.
