Discipleship Lessons from the Jerusalem Council

When Heaven Meets Earth Book of Acts

Join us as we dive into Acts!

In 1970, two days into their mission, NASA’s Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell uttered the now famous words, “Houston, we have a problem.” And, indeed, NASA had a very serious problem as a routine procedure caused a catastrophic explosion that greatly damaged the Lunar Module. As a result, the new mission of Apollo 13 was for the brilliant NASA leaders to find a way to get their boys back home safely. In Acts 15, after their own important mission of sharing the Gospel with the Gentiles, Paul and Barnabas and the church of Antioch faced a very serious problem. The problem was caused by some men coming from the church in Jerusalem and teaching that the Gentiles needed to be circumcised and follow the Mosaic law to be truly saved. This prompted Paul and Barnabas and the church of Antioch to say, “Jerusalem, we have a problem.” They solved this problem by getting leaders from both churches to meet in Jerusalem in what is now known as the Jerusalem Council. Their purpose was to discern from the Holy Spirit what the true doctrine of salvation should be and to determine what, if anything, should be required of the Gentiles. Tune in to this message and find out what was decided and why.
