Commandment #6: You Shall Not Murder (Exodus 20:13)
The 6th commandment simply says “You shall not murder.” Many of us are tempted to read it and then quickly assume that we would never do such a thing.
Like the Pharisees of Jesus day, we want to check our spiritual boxes saying that we have kept this commandment and can move on. However, Jesus would say, “not so fast, my friends, not so fast.” In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, he explains that this commandment is about more than just keeping the letter of the law. It also includes keeping the spirit of the law. Based on Jesus’ explanation, one may realize that the 6th commandment may be broken more than any other. The truth is, according to Jesus, we all have a murder problem that must be dealt with immediately and continually. This sermon challenges us to realize that before we check off our box, we must check our hearts.
