February 2024
It’s February, often known as the month of love due to its mid-month celebration called Valentine’s Day. So we at Calvary certainly encourage all of our married couples and dating couples to enjoy romantic celebrations this month. Also, we will certainly focus on the theme of love as we continue our sermon series through the Gospel of John – the Gospel that gives us John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave us his one and only Son, Jesus.”
Also, it’s February, the month of beautiful weather. Wait a minute, you say, I thought February was the heart of winter with mostly cold and horrific weather. Well, that is what I thought until I came to live in Arkansas for the first time – back in the 1980’s – while playing football at Ouachita Baptist University under Coach Benson’s tutelage. That first year at Ouachita I remember when coach Benson announced that our Spring football practices would begin February 1. What? Spring practice and February 1 in the same sentence? So, in my mind, I thought that we were going to be practicing football during the coldest and worst weather of the year. But, then I discovered that the old ball coach must have known something I didn’t. Perhaps he got it from the Farmer’s Almanac or some other trustworthy source. But, I discovered then and have experienced it since then that February consistently has three weeks of the best weather of the year, and then one really bad week of weather. So, based on this now presumed fact, we have decided to schedule our churchwide family camping trip this month …. just kidding. We won’t take it that far. But, please enjoy the beautiful spring-like days that are most certainly coming our way this month.
Finally, this February at Calvary will include a very special worship experience. On February 18, we will be ordaining four new deacons. They are J. J. Askins, Reed Galloway, Harold Tucker, and Cody Walker. Additionally, we will celebrate Christie Bray who has already been ordained and will be joining the Calvary deaconate. For this special occasion, Calvary is going to have a joint worship service starting at 9:00 a.m. and will push the start time for Bible Study back to 10:30 a.m. Come ready to worship together as one family and ready to meet and commission our new deacons who will fulfill a vitally important role at our church as servant leaders.
So, I hope that you will join me this month in celebrating new deacons, beautiful weather, and the love of God.
