This week is commonly referred to as “Holy Week” or “Passion Week.” In this context “passion” means suffering and refers to the week when Christ suffered on the cross in our behalf. Passion Week is the most important week of the year for Christ followers. It is a week of remembrance, celebration, and worship.
All four of the New Testament Gospels describe the events of Passion Week in great detail. In fact, almost one third of the Gospels are focused on this solitary week in the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is truly the climactic week in the story of the bible and in the life of Jesus because it is the week of the crucifixion and of the resurrection. In other words, it is the week when Jesus completed his mission of redeeming fallen humanity, conquering death, and offering the gift of life to those who would believe in him. It is truly a week worth celebrating.
This year, the week starts with Palm Sunday on April 14th and concludes with Resurrection Sunday on April 21st. I hope that the Calvary family will join me in celebrating this glorious week. Here are a few opportunities for celebration at Calvary:
- Palm Sunday (Sunday morning on April 14th): A special day of worship celebrating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Calvary’s children will be participating in both of our worship services waving palm branches and singing praises to our Lord.
- The Easter Eggstravaganza (Sunday afternoon on April 14th from 3 to 5 PM): An afternoon of family fun with Easter egg hunts, inflatable bounce houses, petting zoo, food trucks, and a visit by the Easter Bunny. This will be a great time of family fellowship and a great opportunity to invite guests to Calvary.
- Maundy Thursday Worship Service (Thursday evening on April 18th from 7 to 8 PM in the Worship Center): A solemn service of worship as we prepare to remember Christ’s suffering on the cross. The service will include scripture readings, music, the Lord’s Supper, and a gradual extinguishing of candles as we move towards the darkness of the cross.
- Resurrection Sunday (Sunday morning April 21st): It is the day for celebrating Christ’s victory for us by way of the cross and the resurrection.
Also, I’m encouraging the Calvary family to use the “Walking with Jesus through Passion Week” devotional guide that I’m providing as an insert in this week’s bulletin. There is also an electronic version available here. It is a great resource for reading and reflecting on the scriptural accounts of each day of Passion Week as we reflect, remember, and worship. So, Calvary family, let’s passionately celebrate Passion Week 2019.
