Last week, Calvary celebrated its annual “Hanging of the Green.” This is the time when volunteers decorate the church’s Worship Center with beautiful Christmas decorations in preparation for the Advent season.

As we worship during the month of December, we can enjoy the beautiful and symbolic décor. Some of the symbols point directly to the Christmas story – angels, shepherds, nativity scenes with baby Jesus, and wise men who came from far away to worship him.

Other symbols are not quite as obvious. These include:

* Evergreen trees and wreaths which represent eternal life – the life provided as a gift by the Christ child

* White lights which represent the pure, perfect, and holy Jesus who is the light of the world

* Poinsettias whose beautiful red flower blossom represents the blood of Christ and reminds us that this beautiful baby came to earth to die as the Savior of mankind

* Bells which represent the church’s desire to proclaim the story of Christmas to all the world

So thank you to our wonderful volunteers who decorated our Worship Center so beautifully for the Advent season. The décor and symbols remind us that we are the recipients of the greatest gift that humankind has ever received. In response, we celebrate through worship and through giving to others. So, thank you to all who participated in Operation Christmas Child, to those who will participate in the non-perishable food drive for Healing Waters, and to those of you who will give to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering.

Christmas Joy – Your Pastor,

Scott
